Norev's Take on the Lesser-Known Karmann Ghia

This 1500 is the Type 34 Karmann Ghia, a squarer, more formal coupe than the rounded, better-known Type 14 built on Beetle mechanicals. Norev's diecast keeps that boxier roofline and the slightly heavier front-end treatment that set the Type 34 apart, finished here in a deep green that suits its more grown-up character. Karmann built the actual bodies by hand in period, a coachbuilder's job rather than a mass-stamping process, and a faithful diecast needs to respect those slightly different proportions rather than reusing tooling meant for the more common variant.

Two Karmann Ghias, One Italian Design House

Both Karmann Ghia variants trace their styling to the Italian design house Ghia, with the German coachbuilder Karmann handling production, but the two cars are built on entirely different Volkswagen platforms. The Type 14 rode on Beetle mechanicals and became the volume seller, the Type 34, badged 1500 for its Type 3 engine displacement, used the larger, more modern Type 3 sedan and wagon platform underneath a similarly Italian-influenced but more angular body. It sold in far smaller numbers and mostly stayed a European-market car.
