The Delta S4 and Group B's Final Season

Lancia developed the Delta S4 with both a turbocharger and a supercharger feeding its mid-mounted engine, a twin-charging solution that minimized lag while delivering explosive power for a rally car of its size, making it one of the defining technical statements of the Group B era. The category's cars grew so powerful and so demanding to control that 1986 marked its last full season of top-level international competition, following safety concerns that led governing bodies to ban Group B from world championship rallying shortly afterward. Rally San Remo, run on demanding Italian roads, formed part of that final Group B championship season, with the Delta S4 representing Lancia's most technically ambitious response to Group B's near-unlimited engineering freedom.
