The C1's Fight to Establish the Corvette Name

The original 1953 Corvette sold so poorly that Chevrolet nearly cancelled the whole project within a couple of years. Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov pushed hard for real performance improvements, and the introduction of a V8 engine option in 1955 gave the car the credibility its underpowered six-cylinder debut had lacked. By 1957, when this example is dated, Corvette had added a fuel-injection option and genuinely competitive performance, turning a near-failed experiment into the foundation the far more famous Sting Ray generation would later build on.
